Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? We've got answers. Below you'll find answers to the most common questions about booking trips, what to bring, our policies, and more.
What's the refund policy?
Please note for all bookings in our online portal a 3% credit card processing fee is already included and is non-refundable. Aside from this we will fully refund any trip up to one week in advance UNLESS WE HAVE TO CANCEL DUE TO WEATHER — in this case you will receive a refund or we will reschedule to another available date.
How do I book a trip?
You can choose your trip here to view available dates and book online.
How much do I have to pay to book a trip?
We charge the full price of the open party trip (priced per seat) or private charter you choose to book. We accept credit cards, cash, checks, and in some cases Venmo.
What should I bring and wear?
What to Bring: CALIFORNIA FISHING LICENSES ARE NOT INCLUDED, YOU MUST PROVIDE ONE (purchase a fishing license here). Aside from this, you'll want to bring food & drinks for the day—soft coolers are best on the boat and cans are preferred over bottles—leave a larger cooler in your car with ice for taking home bags of fillets (fish cleaning & bags are included with every trip).
What to Wear: We recommend waterproof deck or rain boots if you have them, but old tennis shoes will work fine. Long waterproof pants would be your best bet but jeans will work as well. If you have slicks feel free to wear them! We recommend wearing three layers up top to be safe (shirt, sweater, and windbreaker). Mornings in the winter and spring can be chilly, typically starting in the 40s-50s and warming up to the 60s by the afternoon. Spring through fall months are much warmer, with mornings starting in the 50s warming up to the 70s and sometimes 80s in the afternoon.
Where will we meet?
All of our trips have a rough start-time but we will confirm exactly what time to arrive within a week of your trip. Trips depart from Great American Fish Company where free parking is available for the day.
Can I bring my own fishing gear?
Of course—we ask customers to provide tackle for rockfish trips; we'll cover rods, reels, and gear for all other trips. Additionally, you'll be charged for any damaged gear or lost tackle at the end of the day. If you have some setups or lures you'd like to try, you can always give us a call for more specific recommendations.
Is catching guaranteed?
With each trip we can assure we will do everything we can to put you on your target species. However, bluefin tuna, halibut, salmon, and white sea bass are never a guarantee. If you want to be guaranteed to catch fish, we recommend going with one of our rockfish packages. After all, it is fishing, not catching.
How are the trip dates determined?
We want to give you the best opportunity to catch fish on your trip. As we plan our calendar, keep in mind there are many factors that go into the planning of these dates: solar lunar phase, tides, and weather patterns. If you don't see a trip around the time you want, contact us and we will try to make something work.
What time does the boat leave?
You will be notified a week in advance what time the boat leaves the dock in the morning. It's based on current weather conditions and how long it will take to get to the fishing grounds.
Are children allowed?
Our policy for children prohibits passengers under the age of 12. However, if your kid has experience fishing or being on boats and you can prove it, you can contact us and state a claim for them to join the trip.
Where should I stay in Morro Bay?
We recommend 456 Embarcadero Inn and Suites. It's right down the street from the boat, offering great views of the harbor and accommodations that will make you feel right at home.
