Whale Watching

CCFC is excited to offer private Whale Watching Tours year-round to give customers an up-close-and-personal experience with the largest and most docile animals on Earth. From late March through November, Humpback Whales return to the rich, anchovy-filled waters of Morro Bay, putting on an unforgettable show of breaching, tail-slapping, and feeding displays. Peak sightings occur from mid-July through October, when whales gather in their greatest numbers.

During the winter months (January–March), witness the majestic Gray Whales on their north–south migration along the Central Coast. No matter the season, guests are treated to a variety of marine life — playful dolphins, sea lions, porpoises, and curious sea otters — set against the stunning backdrop of the Morro Rock. With small groups, personalized narration, and a deep respect for the ocean, CCFC Captains offer an unmatched, year-round marine adventure that's equal parts educational, exhilarating, and unforgettable.

What to Bring and Where to Meet?

What to Bring: Whale Watching Tours are only 90 minutes but you're welcome to bring snacks & drinks for the outing (soft coolers are best on the boat and cans are preferred over bottles).

What to Wear: We recommend waterproof deck or rain boots if you have them, but old tennis shoes will work fine. Long waterproof pants would be your best bet but jeans will work as well. We recommend wearing three layers up top to be safe (shirt, sweater, and windbreaker). Mornings in the winter and spring can be chilly, typically starting in the 40s-50s and warming up to the 60s by the afternoon. Spring through fall months are much warmer, with mornings starting in the 50s warming up to the 70s and sometimes 80s in the afternoon.

When & Where to Meet: All of our Whale Watching Tours have a rough start-time but we will confirm exactly what time to arrive within a week of your trip. Trips depart from Great American Fish Company where free parking is available for the day.

Whale Watching in Morro Bay

Morro Bay is one of California's best-kept secrets for whale watching. With its sheltered harbor, stunning coastline, and proximity to the migratory paths of several whale species, this Central Coast town offers year-round opportunities to see whales in their natural habitat. Whether you're hoping to witness the breathtaking sight of a gray whale migration or enjoy a private tour with friends and family, Morro Bay delivers an unforgettable whale watching experience.

Whale Migration Patterns in Morro Bay

Gray Whales: Winter and Spring Sightings

Each year, thousands of gray whales travel along the California coast during their annual migration between Alaska and Baja California. From December through April, gray whales can often be spotted passing Morro Bay, sometimes even within view from shore.

Humpback Whales: Summer and Fall Visitors

Humpback whales are the stars of Morro Bay's summer and fall whale watching season. Arriving in April and staying through November, these whales put on spectacular displays of breaching, tail-slapping, and lunge-feeding close to shore.

Blue Whales, Orcas, and Other Species

While less common, blue whales — the largest animals on earth — are occasionally spotted offshore during summer and fall. Other sightings include minke whales, orcas, and plenty of marine life like dolphins, sea lions, and seabirds.

Why Morro Bay is a Prime Whale Watching Destination

The nutrient-rich waters off Morro Bay attract large aggregations of krill, anchovies, and sardines, creating a natural buffet for whales. Its central location on the California coast means nearly every major whale migration passes through this region.

Each of our vessels are equipped for maximum comfort and safety, with shade, seating for everyone, and all of the USCG approved safety gear like life vests, life raft, and EPIRB. We always position our boats at a safe distance to observe whales and marine life, but if you'd like a closer look or a lasting photo, feel free to bring a pair of binoculars or your camera as well.
